The Impact of Korean Players in the MLB

When Dr. Spencer first asked our class how many Korean baseball players were in the Majors, I could only think of a select few. I was shocked to know that there were over 10 players in the Big Leagues. I think that’s really good for Korea and also for the teams that have these players on them. Having Korean born players on your team gives your team a whole new target market because people watching in Korea will begin watching their favorite players and in turn by merchandise and become fans of the team etc.

It’s also great for the game of baseball in general because of the fact that more people in Korea will be exposed to the game if they take interest in watching it to see their favorite players perform over in America.

Overall I feel that having players from other countries will increase competition in the MLB while gaining a whole new target market and fan base.

  1. Dr. Cho brought up a good point about why many Americans might not be aware of how many Korean players are in MLB. He made the comment that many people in the U.S. probably cannot make the distinction between people from Japan and Korea. I noticed when we talked about it in class that some of the people who were mentioned were actually Japanese. I guess that confirms what Dr. Cho said.
